Imaging During Heart Surgery?

Surgeons at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are implementing a new imaging tool to detect complications during heart surgery.

This tool, transesophageal echocardiography, or TEE, is used in order to detect whether or not more holes occur during heart surgery.

One of the common cardiac issues children can face are conotruncal defects, which affect how bloodflow works through the heart chambers. Surgery is done in order to correct this, but residual openings can occur during this sensitive surgery. This is where the TEE comes in.

Rather than having one of these residual openings occur, which normally can only be detected after surgery, surgeons can instead detect when openings immediately with the TEE. Results in this study, showed out of 335 patients, 34 patients experience these residual openings. The TEE showed a 56% rate of sensitivity and 100% rate of specificity to these complications.

At Accessories for MRI, we are continuously impressed with the innovations the imaging industry creates. Here on our site, we do our part to provide the best medical equipment for the imaging field, as well as surgical field. We offer a wide array of MRI-safe equipment, from transport supplies to tech accessories, along with carts and storage options for any surgical needs.

3D Imaging During Brain Surgery

Surgeons at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California are using a 3D imaging device, BrightMatter Guide, to help with brain operations. This could change how surgeries are conducted in the future.

While surgeons are used to having conventional 2D images from MRIs or CT scans, this device allows for 3D viewing. This device may even replace the surgical microscope widely used in operations today, due to this device’s increased sensitivity.

One of the many benefits to this new technique is its ability to map and view the brain in real time during surgery. This would allow surgeons to first hand see any complications that may escape the naked eye, and address such complications.

MRI Detects Causes for Autism

Researchers at the University of Davis, California, conducted a study on the neural connections of autistic children. The team had a group of 43 children with autism and 29 children without autism go through a MRI to compare the brain connectivity of the groups.

Their research so far shows there is disruption between the amygdala to other parts of the brain. The amygdala is mainly responsible for emotions; this disconnection between the emotional core to areas responsible for language and communication may be a cause for autism.

While some of this research is known already in the study of autism, there was another finding in this particular group. Connections relating to increase hypersensitivity were also found in areas of the primary visual cortex.

In straight-forward terms, these researchers have found not only are there disconnections in the brain which may cause autism, but there is increased sensory sensitivity for those with autism, which perhaps contributes to greater severity of the condition.

What these results may signal for autistic children, is not known yet. Fortunately with greater understanding comes better treatment.

At Accessories for MRI, we are happy to see how the field of pediatrics is growing. We also understand how difficult the process of MRI procedures for children can be. In this study, it was noted children had a difficult time staying still for the scanner, and as such needed to perform scans when they were sleeping. We offer a number of pediatric equipment to help children remain calm for exams, as well as MRI accessories for patient comfort.

MRIs Detect Change within Children Athletes

Researchers in North Carolina, Maryland, and Texas studied the effects of playing football for one season had on children aged 8-13. While most are familiar with the concussions pro-football athletes experienced, these researchers wanted to see if other head impacts that do not lead to a concussion have an effect.

The study included 25 children with average age of 11, and they underwent scanning before and after their season of football. While necessary steps were taken with children who did experience a concussion, they were excluded from this study. The results showed differences in white matter in the brain.

Among this test group, there were changes in the white matter and several other connections within the brain. Researchers could not conclude if there was any long-term affects to these changes, but it was noted there was a decrease in activity in some areas of the brain, at least after the season of football.

At Accessories for MRI, we aim to offer the best for pediatric needs. For children in this sort of study, we offer several MRI accessories to provide patient comfort and safety. While kids may feel invincible playing a game of football, they may not feel quite so thrilled at the prospect of a MRI scan. If you would like to make your MRI more inviting to children, we offer a wide range of pediatric medical equipment, and MRI Accessories, like SAMM M.D. and MRI Stereo
